It’s been a year now since Gianni Chiloiro and Angelo Sannino, owners of the Doppio Zero pizzeria chain.

In the winter they opened Vida, a new tapas restaurant just down the street from Mountain View outpost Doppio Zero. And earlier this month, they opened their fourth Bay Area Doppio Zero location on Laurel Street in San Carlos—with a fifth restaurant slated to open in downtown Campbell this fall.

Doppio Zero opened in the former Otra Vez Mexican Kitchen space on June 16th. Food offerings are “about 90% off,” with a full beer, wine, and cocktail menu. Vida’s mixologist was also recruited for the San Carlos cocktail menu, Chiluero said, making it “better than any Doppio Zero to date.”

“We have been working in this field for 10 years now, and we have achieved great success, and it is only natural that we look for other sites,” he said. “People always need good food at a moderate price.”

Known for its Neapolitan pizza and house-made pastas, the southern Italian restaurant opened in Mountain View in 2014. Airy pizza dough takes 72 hours to bake because it contains very little yeast, which lengthens the time it takes to rise, Chiloero said.

“I think our concept works because we have quality food, a nice atmosphere, and a moderate price—not expensive but not cheap. So everyone can come in and get a $45 to $500 bottle of wine.”

While San Carlos Doppio Zero moved into a 3,000-square-foot space that was once a restaurant, Campbell’s location was in the former Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy store and combined with a gym that was next door. The 4,400-square-foot restaurant will be brand new, and Chiloiro hopes to open by October. It is expected to remain open an hour after San Carlos to account for the younger population.

After this important year 2023, what next? Chiloiro says they plan to open another Doppio Zero next year between San Carlos and San Francisco and another Vida location in San Jose.

“People respond well to our concept, so we’re continuing to do that,” he said.
